Jesus said “I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life. No one comes to the Father, but by me.” John 14:6
Truth!
What a lost word in today’s world. “Truth” is so fluid in our post-modern society. Truth today is more about ‘your’ views, ‘your’ feelings, ‘your’ experiences, then the rock-solid unchanging foundation it used to be, and should be. True Truth is an absolute! God is the same yesterday, today, and forever according to Hebrews 13:8. That is what Truth looks like. Jesus is The Truth.
John 18:36-38 gives us a portion of Jesus’s trial before Pontius Pilate, a tragic figure in human history. After asking Jesus what he had done to be tried and potentially crucified, “Jesus answered ‘My kingdom is not of this world. If my kingdom were of this world, then would my servants fight, that I should not be delivered to the Jews: but now is my kingdom not from hence.’ Pilate therefore said unto Him, ‘Art thou a king then?’ Jesus answered ‘Thou sayest that I am a king. To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice.’ Pilate saith unto Him, ‘What is truth?” He then leaves, rejecting the Truth before him, supposedly washing his hands of responsibility for Jesus’s crucifixion.
Truth was talking to him, staring him in the face, literally! And yet he missed it, like so many do.
People all over the world say they want truth, but when presented with the Truth of Jesus, so many want to reject that Truth. The only Truth. The truthiest Truth there is!
I think its because that with that Truth of who Jesus is, we also have to accept the truth of who we are. We are sinners, in need of a Savior. We are enemies of God, needing a Peace-Maker. We are broken, unable, sorry messes, in need of a Redeemer. We can’t do it ourselves, no matter how hard we try. The Truth is, we can’t do it at all. Jesus did it for us, and freely gives it to us; His Righteousness in exchange for our sinful selves. What a deal! What a Truth! I gladly accept, and believe The Truth.
Furthermore, Jesus is not ‘a’ truth; He is The Truth. Jesus is not ‘a’ way; He is The Way. Jesus is not ‘a’ life; He is The Life. Jesus is the only Way, Truth and Life for both this life and the Eternal Life to come.
Jesus as The Truth, goes further than just Salvation. It encompasses every part of my earthly and eternal life. All truth is God’s truth. So whatsoever things are true, honest, just, pure, lovely, of good report, if there be any virtue, or any praise, those things are to be thought upon, embraced. (Phil. 4:8) Those things are from God. They bring us peace from the God of peace, because they are Truth. (4:9)
Jesus prayed for us in John 17:17 “Sanctify them though thy Truth, thy Word is Truth.”
I remember not knowing what to pray when I had 2 prodigal children. I had peace and comfort when I prayed for them to have “Truth in the inward parts.” (Psalm 51:6) I prayed repeatedly that God would show them Truth; show them Himself. I couldn’t begin to know what their true needs were, except I knew they needed Truth. They are not prodigal anymore. They came back to The Truth.
Jesus is The Truth, and in this crazy world of upside down virtual reality, I am deeply comforted by this name for my Savior. I hope it comforts you too. John 8:32 says “And ye shall know the Truth, and the Truth shall make you free.” I am truly free indeed 🙂
